Audacity Sound Editing – July 16, 2015 (** Gordy Hall 015)

Nathaniel Berger (CREATE_Space) and Greg Kessler (Linguistics) will lead a workshop on Audacity, “free, open source, cross-platform software for recording and editing sounds.” We’ll look at the basic features of audacity, discuss some of the physics and math behind sound, and see what kind of creative editing and filtering we can do.
Programming Workshop (Scratch) – July 9, 2015
On Thursday July 9 we’ll meet in Clippinger 036 to learn about programming in Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu) with Dr. Chang Liu from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. This will be a great chance to get a better handle on programming through the graphical programming environment, Scratch, created by en educational technology group at the MIT Media Lab.
Open Work Night – July 2, 2015
July 2 will be an Open Work night in Clippinger 036. We will have the Arduino Kits available as well as the Makey Makeys. We will also have a couple of tubs of K’Nex and Legos. Bring your ideas and projects, work with your friends, or just explore some more!
Makey Makey Workshop June 15, 2015
The Makey Makey is a small arduino-powered board that can emulate a keyboard or a mouse using anything that can conduct electricity. Hook it up to yourself and a banana and suddenly you’re controlling the computer using a banana keyboard! See http://makeymakey.com/ We will meet from 6-8PM in Clippinger 036. I will provide a variety of materials to try out ( a few bananas, some playdough, aluminum foil, etc…) but if you have things you’d like to try (within reason!), bring it in!

Polymer Party! June 25, 2015 (date change)
Dr. Shad Paris, the leader of last year’s Fiery Chemistry Workshop, has planned a Polymer Party for the June 25th Maker’s session! (note date change) (6-8PM) Come make nylon and a variety of other materials while you learn about polymers that are all around us! You’ll want to wear closed toe shoes and long pants, preferably. And while it’s not a huge issue, if you have reactions to strong smells, make sure you are prepared. We will be using the hoods. We will gather in Clippinger 194 for an introduction and then head down to the labs. No reservations necessary.
Arduino – June 4 & 11, 2015

What: The Arduino Microcontroller is a small computer that allows one to easily interface with the world: light lights, sense buttons, run motors, …. This open-source design is one of the major fixtures in the modern-day Do-It-Yourself community. Our first two Maker gatherings of the summer will focus on the Arduino. We’ll have projects for both beginners and more advanced users. Workshops are for Middle School and High-school aged kids. Parents are encouraged to hang around, especially for the younger kids. We will have a collection of kits, but feel free to bring your own if you have one.

Welcome to a whole new summer of Athens Makers! We are still putting together more solid plans for the summer, but we will start with a two-session Arduino workshop Thursday June 4 and Thursday June 11 from 6-8PM. More Maker plans are in the works, so check back for other plans.

ARIS – Augmented Reality and Game Design – July 31, 2014

Uniquely, mobile devices can locate a person within a few meters. Unlike many mobile applications, some of them can use location to tell stories and involve the player in location-based games – or augmented reality. This session will introduce you to this genre of digital narratives and we’ll spend most of our time learning to design and make location based interactive adventures. No programming skills are needed, we’ll show you all you need to know to make your own. Bring your own laptop and iOS device if you have them, we’ll have a few extras if you do not
